Since it is tough for small-sized loudspeakers to reproduce frequencies under 40 Hz, and really tough for under 100 dB, people often choose to use a loudspeaker just for this purpose. Hence the subwoofer, a kind of loudspeaker that reproduces bass frequencies ranging most generally from roughly 20 Hz to around 200 Hz. DO you need one? Depends upon how well you want to hear, if your sound is reproduced under 40 Hz.

SubwoofersÂ’ drivers, known as woofers, average between 8″ and 15″, and can run 34″ even. And drivers begin at 4;” those under 8″ generally donÂ’t reproduce lower frequencies with good quality.

Use high-powered amps with subwoofers and an electronic crossover and low-pass filter. There are two types of subwoofers; those with an amp in the subwoofer cabinet (active), and those without the amplifier (passive).

Home Theater

With regards to the use of subwoofers in home theater systems, they come mounted in a sealed enclosure. Some people like to focus attention of their systems around satellite speakers, hiding their subwoofer; hence it may be packaged within the system. Others build the subwoofer into the theater cabinet.

Why the separation? To keep them out of site, for one thing. Plus for sensitivity issues dealing with the areasÂ’ sound compatibility and mode. Some people prefer to place the subwoofer near the listener.

Bottom line is, if you want to be able to hear low frequencies, you need a subwoofer. If you donÂ’t care, donÂ’tÂ’ worry about it then.

When will this come into play? Lower frequencies are needed with older sound formats, like with vinyl records replaced with digital formats, like CDs, mainly with 5.1 formats Dolby Digital and DTS (where the “.1″ channel is for the bass frequencies, for the subwoofer), common choice of mixed artists.

Typical car audio systems have small speakers with limited ability to reproduce low-frequency sounds. Car audio subwoofers can add more depth to a car audio system by reproducing frequencies below 150 hertz. A subwoofer can add strong and powerful basses to your car audio.

Most car audio subwoofers are installed in the trunk due to space limitations in the cabin of the car. Subwoofers are usually 10 inches or 12 inches in diameter although they can be as big as 34 inches and as small as 4 inches.

Wider subwoofers allow for more efficient air displacement which is critical for low frequencies.

The amplifier for car audio subwoofers can be integrated into the cabinet or installed as a separate unit. The amplifier should have an electronic crossover to filter out high-frequency sounds before the signal is passed to the subwoofer.

Although car audio subwoofers are usually round in shape, recently manufactures have been introducing subwoofers in new shapes. Square subwoofers have been released by Stillwater Designs and other companies have introduced triangular and hexagonal subwoofers. These innovative designs may be easier to install in cars with limited space, but there is no acoustical advantage to nonround shapes.

The type of enclosure for car audio subwoofers influences the kind of sound that is produced.

There are five basic types of subwoofer enclosures -

* sealed,

* ported,

* bandpass,

* passive radiator and

* transmission line systems.

For car use, the most practical type of enclosure is the sealed enclosure because it requires the minimum space and matches the audio requirements of a typical car interior.

There are many premade enclosures for car audio subwoofers on the market. Alternatively, you can have one custom-made or build one yourself. When you buy a subwoofer driver, you will usually receive a spec sheet which gives you guidelines for enclosure requirements. Also check out the spec sheets for power requirements and linear response – a flat response will give the truest sound.

Many people are tempted to crank up the sound when they have car audio subwoofers installed. Although it sounds great, take care – prolonged exposure to loud sounds can permanently affect your hearing.

Most people would say that a dime isn’t worth very much. That is, a dime doesn’t look like much, except when you apply it to the rising cost of filling your car with gas. Increasing the price per gallon by a dime multiple times in a month has quickly added up over the last year or two. Everyone has been feeling the strain of that increase. Every person is looking for ways to save on the cost of gas, but you can make significant savings simply by changing the way you drive on a daily basis.

Change how you drive

Many people don’t know that how they drive can save them money on gas. Most of the time, we’re just worried about not being late to work or getting the kids to practice when they need to be. Everyone knows that city driving results in lower gas mileage than highway driving. Why is that? Stopping for red lights often uses up gas because it means increasing acceleration to get going again, therefore, using more gas. The faster you try to get your car to go after stopping at a red light, the faster you will use up your gasoline. If you consciously make an effort to accelerate slowly after being stopped, you’ll save yourself a bit of gas and probably won’t get to where you need to be any later.

Some people are better than others at anticipating what the car in front of them is about to do, especially if they’re used to driving in heavy traffic. Many people who work in the city but live outside of it become accustomed to the changes in traffic patterns, including going faster as traffic becomes thinner or braking suddenly when it gets heavier. By anticipating what is going on ahead of you, you will be able to be able to avoid sudden stops and starts. You can simply lift your foot off the gas pedal to decrease your speed. A gradual slowing as well as starting will help you to save on your gas.

Getting passed on the highway can be frustrating to a lot of people, but it can be an economical decision for saving gas. By constantly keeping your foot pressed on the accelerator, you are forcing your car to go faster. Yes, that will allow you to pass someone, but you are burning up gas more quickly than you need to do. Most likely, you won’t get to where you’re going more than a few seconds faster anyway. You don’t need to overtake other vehicles on your way to work each day. You’ll still make it there in about the same amount of time.

Change how you fill up

When you stop at a gas station, there are things you can do as well to save a little money here and there. For example, choosing your filling station wisely will help you to save money. Don’t go to a place simply because it’s on the right side of the highway as you’re going home, but choose the place that offers the cheapest prices for gas. Yes, you may have to use a little extra gas to get there, but in the long run, you’ll come out on top by making the most economical choice. A few cents does help when it comes to buying gas.

The time of day you stop for gas will also make a difference in the gas that you pump. Just like your fingers on a hot summer day after a jog, gas expands in warmer temperatures. So by filling up your tank early in the morning, you are actually getting a bit more gas for the same amount of money. Also, by filling up the tank slowly, you are preventing air from getting mixed in with your gasoline. Try to take your time as you fill up the tank and you may just see an improvement in your gas mileage.

Though alternative sources for fuel will probably be the best bet in the long run for our environment and on our wallets, for now we must do what we can to make wise decisions at the gas pump. By being conscious of the way you drive and fill up your car, you can do what you can to save your money and have your day be less affected by the price of gas going up another dime.

Computer sound problems can be very frustrating. The truth is that troubleshooting sound problems is a little different than most other troubleshooting because the usual troubleshooting approach of stripping the PC down to bare essentials often doesnÂ’t apply.

The following questions and answers help highlight what can go wrong and suggest the approaches you can use to diagnose and repair the problem.

Question 1: I only hear sound out of one speaker. WhatÂ’s happening and what can I do?

Answer: You can troubleshoot this by isolating the problem to the sound card/computer, cable, or speakers. You can test your speakers on an alternate source, such as a Walkman, portable stereo, or other audio source.

If the test works (and you used the same cable), the problem is probably in the computer or sound card setup. If the test fails, try a different cable. If that works, the cable is the problem; otherwise, you might have a problem with the speakers.

Check the cabling between speakers and make sure the balance control is set properly. If your speakers have independent power sources, make sure both are working (donÂ’t forget that batteries fail).

Question 2: Why does the volume control on my speakers not work?

Answer: Your speakers require either an external power supply or batteries to power the amplifier, which is what implements the volume control. Make sure that you have fresh batteries or the appropriate power supply and that the power switch is turned on.

Question 3: Why does the red light on my speakers not turn on when I turn on the power switch?

Answer: Verify that you have fresh batteries or that youÂ’re using a power supply for the speakers and that itÂ’s powered on. If the speakers plug in, make sure thereÂ’s power at the wall outlet.

Question 4: Can I use any speakers with any subwoofer?

Answer: Not necessarily, because some speaker/subwoofer combinations have nonstandard connections. What you can do, though, is to cable the speakers as if there are two independent sets of speakers (the speakers themselves and the subwoofer).

You do that by connecting a ‘Y’ adapter to your sound card. Plug the tail of the Y into the computer and speakers into the branches. (Alternatively, some subwoofers work when plugged into the line-out jack on the sound card, eliminating the need to split the speaker-out jack connection.)

Question 5: I need to set up my computer for videoconferencing, but the noise is too distracting to my office mates. What can I do?

Answer: The best answer is the same solution as for noisy speakerphones — get a headset. You can get headsets that plug into your sound card speaker and microphone jacks directly, giving you good sound quality, keeping background noise out of your conversation, and keeping peace in your office.
