Mini Me
The Nokia N97 was the company’s flagship product with a decent performance. Nokia now wants to optimise its touchscreen portfolio by releasing the smaller version of the N97 called the N97 mini. First let’s discuss the major differences between the two devices. For starters, as the name suggest the N97 is much smaller than its predecessor and lighter too at 138 grams as compared to the 150 gram N97. The screen of N97 mini measures 3.2 inches as opposed to the N97 at 3.5 inches. Internal memory of the N97 mini has been reduced to 8 GB — down from 32 GB in the Nokia N97. The camera does not come with a lens cover and the D-pad on the QWERTY keypad has been replaced with the arrow keys. The N97 mini has a 1200 mAh battery mini vs Nokia N97′s 1500 mAh. Unlike the N97, the mini does not have an all-plastic body and the battery cover is made of metal. The N97 mini does not have an FM transmitter function also.
In terms of looks, there is no significant change in the device from its predecessor except that it’s smaller. The phone is a side slider with a 3.2-inch screen on the front panel. Below the screen are the diagonally placed menu key and touch sensitive calling keys. The left spine has the charging slot and sliding lock while the volume rocker and the shutter release keys are on the right. The top panel has a 3.5 mm jack and the power key. Sliding out the lower panel reveals that the upper panel rests at an angle comfortable for viewing the screen without holding it in the hand. The QWERTY keypad has disjointed square keys, which are comfortable to use. Overall, the device is sleek and smart with a balanced size and ergonomic design making it easy to hold and manage.
Deja Vu
The N97 mini also runs on ARM 11 434 MHz processor but reduced size and compact functionality has improved the performance. The operating system in the mini is Symbian S60 version 9.4 with series 60 UI. However, Nokia has added a new feature called ‘Flick Scroll’ so one can just flick the finger up and down on the screen to make it scroll. While the icons require a single tap to open, the list menu needs double tapping for activation. The widget-enabled home screen lets you showcase five widgets apart from the usual time, date and profile tabs. All these widgets can be customised and one can simply change them by activating the edit menu with a long press on a particular widget. You can hide the widgets by swiping your finger horizontally across the screen and make them appear the same way. The built-in accelerometer allows users to silence calls by just turning the phone upside down. The device supports handwriting recognition and virtual alphanumeric keypad is also available.
The N97 mini supports all major E-mail clients like POP3 and IMAP4. Users can open Word, Excel and PPT files but they have to buy Quick Office upgrade in order to edit and create new documents. The PDF viewer is also available for a 15-day trial period.
The device comes with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. While Bluetooth has A2DP support, Wi-Fi comes with Universal Plug and Play (UpnP). Browsing the Web on the N97 is a good experience. The 3.0-inch screen enhances it further. Touch features like double tapping for zooming in and out make browsing easier. The browser comes with an overview mode where the page appears as a minimap. However, there’s no way to open new pages in new tabs manually. The Nokia N97 mini comes with a GPS receiver with A-GPS support and Ovi Maps 3.1. Getting an initial lock takes some time. The navigation licence is free just for the first 10 days. The device offers both vehicle as well as pedestrian voice guided navigation
Music and Camera
The Nokia N97 mini comes with a music player and FM radio with RDS support. The songs are sorted on the basis of albums, genres, composers and artists. There are six presets, including the default. However, users can edit the existing ones and also create new ones. The player comes with additional sound enhancement options such as loudness and stereo widening. The FM radio can store up to 20 channels and can be played on the loudspeaker. The interface of the FM radio and the music player has been touch optimised. Music controls have also been given on the wired headsets and the sound quality is commendable through the headsets and OK on the loudspeaker. The device has a 5.0-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics. The picture quality ranges from 0.3 megapixel to 5.0 megapixel. The maximum resolution can be set at 2592×1944 pixels. The dual LED flash helps in low light conditions. Camera settings include scenes like close-up, portrait, sports as well as self timer, colour tone, white balance and sequence shots. Users can geo-tag pictures. However, there are no additional innovations like shake control, face detection, smile detection, etc. The picture quality of the camera is good while the video quality is decent. Video settings include night mode, white balance and colour tone. Video quality ranges from MMS to widescreen high quality.

The Nokia N97 mini comes with a number of pre-loaded applications such as Joiku spot, Boingo, AccuWeather, CNBC-TV18, Facebook, Hi5, Ovi Store, etc. The device can support up to 16 GB expandable memory. The battery backup of the N97 mini is decent. A single charge lasts for a day, which includes playing music, constant use of the Internet and Email and two hours of making and receiving calls.

It is becoming one of the more popular questions from our customers: What is HD Radio? I figured that it would make sense to answer that question and dispel some of the myths.
How HD Radio Works (my version)
First of all, HD Radio does not require a subscription. Unlike Satellite Radio, It is free once you have the correct equipment (more on that later). HD Radio is broadcast as a digital “overlay” on a standard AM or FM signal. It is a bunch of ones and zeros that travel along with many of your favorite stations. An HD Tuner in your home or car decodes this into high quality music. Many “overlays” can travel along a single FM or AM frequency (station)
Follow along with my very lame analogy. Suppose you have a very winding and fast flowing river. That river is your FM signal. The “waves” that travel along it are your traditional FM or AM analog transmission. The whole width of the river is necessary to create sound at the other end. Sometimes that sound is a little distorted because of “rapids” and bends that confuse or block some of the waves. The analog tuner at the other end turns it into sound along with the distortions or missing music.
Now imagine that there are millions of ones and zeros floating in a very orderly “stream” down one side of the river. They stay in order and arrive at the “receiver” in the same condition that they were sent (I know.. they would get all mixed up in a real river but just play along!). The end result is crystal clear sound with very minimal distortion or interference.
Take that analogy a step further. The ones and zeros are relatively small in comparison to the river. You could actually float many “streams” of ones and zeros next to one another and have totally different information on each one. Still the same river (frequency) but multiple streams of information. You end up with several different audio streams riding along on the same frequency. Your HD tuner can decipher these streams and let you listen to different versions of the same station.
Taken right from the HD Radio website, HD Radio gives you:
- FM stations now with CD-quality sound
- AM stations now with FM-quality sound
- Crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion
In addition, because it is digital, you can receive a lot of text based information right on your radio’s display. Weather, traffic, song information, and basically anything the broadcaster wishes can be displayed on the receiver’s screen.
I like it! How do I get it?
For the purposes of this post, I will go over how you can get HD Radio in your vehicle. Essentially, there are 4 different ways:
- Many new car radios have an HD Tuner built in. You are able to pick up HD the moment you drive off the new car dealer’s lot. And if you want to take full advantage of the digital quality sound, I would recommend stopping by your local independently owned mobile electronics store. They can show you affordable upgrades to your factory system that will bring out the best in HD Radio.
- Certain factory radios can accept an HD Radio input with special aftermarket adapters. You will not need to replace your factory radio, but you will need an HD tuner hidden out of sight by a professional. In some cases, this adapter can also accept the direct input of an Apple iPod. Once again, I recommend an independent specialist in your area.
- Replace your existing in dash radio with one that has HD Radio built in. There are a variety of solutions on the market today.
- If you don’t want to replace your radio and the one you have cannot accept an aftermarket adapter, you can still enjoy HD Radio. A plug and play outboard receiver with a display can be mounted on your dash and works through your existing radio. I recommend these only when other options are not possible. While they sound very good, they do not have the exceptional sound quality of the options above.
How do Satellite Radio and HD Radio Compare?
There are many differences:
- HD Radio is free and Satellite requires a monthly fee.
- HD Radio is censored and Satellite radio is uncensored.
- Satellite Radio gives your more on demand options while HD Radio gives you what is available in the immediate market.
- Satellite radio is nationwide and HD Radio can be received in an area similar to what you are used to on FM and AM. In other words, it will cut out after you move far enough away from the land based tower.
- HD Radio allows you to listen to your favorite local DJ’s and programming while Satellite is a nationwide broadcaster.
- Satellite offers more selection of sports and talk radio than is likely available on HD in your market.
