Another offering by the father of landscape architecture, Frederick Law Olmsted, the 1876 Mont-Royal Park is his only creation outside of the United States. It features trademark twisting paths that lead gently to the top of 765-foot Mont-Royal. The mountain, from which the city takes it name, was climbed by Jacques Cartier in 1535.

At the summit, reached via Douglas MacArthur Bridge from Jefferson Avenue, are

views of downtown Montreal and across the St. Lawrence River into New YorkÂ’s

Adirondack Mountains. You can leave the wide paved trails and explore dirt paths in

the upper regions of the park that pass through light woods. At the base of the

mountain are plenty of grassy lawns to sprawl with your dog.

About one-half hour north is Chemin de la Presqu’île. Long ago, “Chemin de la

Presqu’île” was the name of the horse and buggy road that linked Mascouche and

Repentigny. To commemorate the road that led citizens to Repentigy lands recessed

between Assomption river and the Saint-Lawrence, Jean-Marie Desrosiers decided

to give the same name to the vast network of trails he created in Le Gardeur in

1978.

The Presqu’île Trail boasts a network of four well-marked, pleasing hiking trails

ranging from a little over a mile to about 3 miles. Since the early 1990s, dogs have

been welcome on the park trails and can even be walked without a leash.

The canine hiking is at an easy clip on the flat trails along the Le Gardeur section,

however the hike becomes more challenging along the undulating loops that meet

the Mascouche section. Small ponds provide a spot for dogs to cool off but also

bring squadrons of mosquitoes. Bring plenty of insect repellent for you and your

dog – the females get so hungry for a blood meal that hikers are not charged

admission in summer.

The dog-friendly park is located in Le Gardeur and reached from Highway 40 or

640, Exit 97.

Building Instructions

The best method for creating a practice studio which will let you do live rehearsals and recordings is to follow the instructions in the free brochure Acoustics 101 which you can download from http://www.auralex.com. You’ll learn that maximum soundproofing for your music studio requires construction of a “room within a room.”

The ideas in this brochure can be used, however, for any sort of room soundproofing project, because the concept it describes takes advantage of the sealed air space which you’ll created between the new walls of you music studio and the old walls of the original room. If space allows, you can dampen the noise you’ll be making even further by constructing a separate ceiling for your room within a room, but that’s not always practical. What will be practical is for you to frame the walls for your new room flat on the floor and then lift them into position.

Adding Soundproofing Material

If you must keep the original ceiling, soundproof it either with mass loaded vinyl (MLV) or a blend of MLV and closed cell foam. When you’ve finished framing the walls, and measured for dead air space, you can begin soundproofing the new room.

I recommend lining the pockets between the new and old walls with American Mat or a similar foam of closed cell vinyl nitrile, which is usually ¼” thick and will be glued to the studs, joists, and interior cavity walls with contact cement. You won’t be filling the cavities with the American Mat; you’ll only be lining them.

Adding Insulation and Decoupling

If your room within a room is being constructed in an unheated garage or basement, you might decide that thermal insulation is a good idea. If so, I suggest you use Roxul, a terrific batt insulation of thermal rock wool which also has great Soundproofing properties.

If most of the noise your band makes is low frequency noise coming from either acoustic drums or a bass amplifier, you should now decouple the walls. We’ll discuss decoupling methods in further articles, but if you are using high-powered amplifiers ( 4 X 12 cabinets with fifty-watt amps, for example) along with an Ampeg bass system and miked acoustic drums, then you can get by without decoupling.

Finishing Your Home Recording Studio

If you won’t be decoupling, then get some more high quality MLV and staple it directly either to the joists or the studs on your assembled walls. Overlap the seams and seal them with OSI acoustical caulk, and then tape them with either heavy PVC or lead tape.

When you’ve finished sealing the MLV, put in a final layer of 5/8″ drywall, buttering its edges with more of the acoustical caulk. Then tape, mud, and paint it, and you’re finished! You have your own in-home soundproof recording studio!

So you have the wheels and now you want the sound to go with them. You have decided to go for some Infinity equipment, but maybe you are a little spoilt for choice with the types and models. Here are a few tips to help you pick the right Infinity speakers for your car.

Although there are many different model numbers, Infinity divides its speakers into two classes namely the Kappa and the Reference. So what is the difference? They are both high quality and will greatly improve the sound of your music. You can buy Reference Infinity speakers new for less than $20 whereas the other range starts upwards of $80. If you are looking to replicate that at home audio feel and are not constrained by your budget, then I would suggest you opt for the Kappa.

Don’t forget that your speakers are only one of the four vital components of your sound system. You can probably get away without upgrading the CD or DVD unit unless the car is an ancient model. But if you install top of the range speakers, you need to invest in a subwoofer and amplifier. Otherwise you could blow your new speakers in a matter of minutes.

Why do you need a subwoofer? All music has a base element to it and ordinary speakers just cannot do it justice. You could use a sub to share your music tastes with the neighborhood but that is rarely a good idea. However, if you really want to enjoy fantastic music on your car journeys get a subwoofer installed. You will thank me later.

A subwoofer without an amplifier is a like a car without fuel. Might look nice but it is not going to be very useful. An amp will give you the power you need so install one today and make sure it is sufficiently powerful and compatible with both your alternator and your new Infinity car speakers.
