Do you know how everyone gets hurt in a marriage relationship at sometime or another? Even a Christian marriage is made up of two imperfect people trying to live together everyday. We do and say things that hurt each other (usually unintentionally). However, if you do not forgive your mate, then walls of anger and resentment build up which can damage the foundation of your marriage. Once those walls are in place it is hard to trust your partner and be intimate emotionally or physically.
There is a proverb that says an offended brother is harder to win than a walled city (Proverbs 18:18-20). Not only is an offended brother hard to win, but so is an offended spouse.
Many people do not even realize that they are still holding on to past offenses. Here are six warning signs that you have not forgiven your mate:
1. Dwell on how you spouse has hurt you.
When you keep thinking about how much you have been hurt, then you have not forgiven them. Your mate may have been wrong in what they did, but you are the one suffering when you keep dwelling on the offense. It robs you of peace and contentment.
2. Think of ways to get even.
If you keep coming up ways to make him/her suffer, then you have not forgiven your mate.
3. The ice storm
An ice storm occurs when you get angry and withdraw from your mate. The big chill blows through your home. This may be your initial response to an offense, but if it continues it can damage the foundation of your marriage.
4. Irritability
There are many causes of irritability, such as fatigue and stress. However, resentment is another reason why we become easily annoyed. If you find that you are snapping more at your spouse, start by prayerfully examining your heart to see if there are any offenses that you have not forgiven.
5. Bring up the incident
If you keep bringing up a past incident, especially during an argument, then it is a sign that you have not forgiven your mate. During an argument, you might say, “This is just like when you did _______.” This is a sign that you have not forgiven him/her for the transgression.
6. Get angry when you think about the incident
Forgiveness is not necessarily forgetting about the offense, but the pain is released. If you still get mad about it, then you still have resentment over the issue.
Forgiveness is something that we all have to work to achieve and sometimes we have to do it several times a day. If you hold onto resentment and anger, then you lose peace both within yourself and in your relationship. Is holding on to that offense worth the price that you are paying for it?
