Today we gonna take a closer look to the Epson Home Cinema 6500 UB. Officially released at the CEDIA show in September 2008 and on the market since late December 2008.

Contrast. The best to be underlined about the contrast is that the 6500 UB produces extremely good the black levels in very dark scenes which can be seen in some movies or video games. This is achieved mostly thanks to closing down the auto iris when the scene fades to black. The contrast ratio of this HD projector is 75000:1.

Sharpness. If you like very high sharpness, the default settings of the projector are set to the highest possible and is noticeable right after you play your first movie. Anyway, the options are allowing to lower it down to -5 if you like to see less enhancement.

Brightness. The brightness is rated to 1600 ANSI lumens. Using the eco-mode reduces the lamp output by 23%. Some reviews that I check earlier today report for not the best brightness light you may expect and all recommend using the eco-mode for better performance in rooms set for home theater (darkened).

Accuracy and Color Saturation. If you take the 6500 UB out of the box, the default settings are set for lower saturation than what you can get if you adjust it. The projector is capable to perform with solid balance and saturation.

Lens Shift and Manual Zoom. All the focus, lens shift adjustments and zoom are manual. The zoom is 2.1 which is one on the longest right now on the market. Vertical lens shift gives you the option to move the picture up and down total 2.9 heights. The sideway range of the horizontal lens is 1.95 picture widths.

Connectivity. Its nothing that haven been seen before. We got two HDMI ports, VGA, composite and S-video.

Lamp Life. Interesting here is that the manufacturer Epson guarantees 4000 hours of lamp life in normal and eco-mode(most of the projectors usually have longer life in eco-mode). If you watch 2 movies every day, 365 days in the year with standard length of hour and a half each movie, the lamp can last for almost four years. The projector uses an Epson-Twin Optimized Lamp(called E-TORL). I will suggest as well other HD projector freaks to change your lamp before it dies, because with time the lamp loses significant amount of brightness.
