A device called Amber Alert, named after a child who was kidnapped and murdered, was invented by Russell Thornton following his young son’s disappearance at a carnival. It was only half an hour before he was found but Russell was out of his brain. That’s when he decided to do something about finding missing children. He invented a global tracking device which works globally. It can be worn on the wrist, ankle or belt. It can also be placed in a school bag or backpack and the location of the child can be known immediately. But it also works for adults.

Everyone is Vulnerable At Times

Bush walkers are prone to disappear without a trace and a British backpacker is currently missing in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, Australia. He has been gone for more than a week with no hint of where he is or the direction he might have taken. This is real wilderness with massive cliffs and hard to negotiate terrain. It is subject to flash floods and massive waterfalls and, while the animals may not be too dangerous, the freezing nights (down to minus 6 degrees at this time of the year) are.

For the lost there is often no way of knowing north from south as the fog closes in quickly and may last for hours, even whole days. It may also be overcast for many days. Several people have gone missing here in the last few months. Recently a 16 year old boy died while on an excursion with his school.

He became lost, disorientated and unable to find the group. By the time he was found it was too late. He used his mobile phone to call for help but could not give his position. Then the battery went flat. An older man with Alzheimer has not been seen for some 2 years. Not so long ago a lady left her partner for a toilet break and fell over a cliff to her death.

Statistics cited by Russell Thornton, show that:

• Children of any age, gender or race are subjected to kidnapping
• Over 50 % of non family member abductions occurred on the street or in an area with trees
• In such cases they were taken away in vehicles.
• The majority of kids or teens that are abducted are taken by family members or by people known to them
• Only 25% are taken by strangers
• Those strangers are almost always men

How To Avoid Child Kidnapping

Here are a list of things you can easily do to ensure your precious child is well protected. Prevention is better than a cure in this case so:

* Know where your child is and know who they are with.

* Never leave your child alone in a public place, stroller or car.

* Always accompany your child to a public restroom.

* Teach your child to never accept gifts, rides or money from strangers.

* Establish a routine for picking your child up from school and other activities.

* Make sure your child knows their full name, address and phone number.

* Make sure that your child knows how to reach you (cell numbers and work numbers).

* Teach your child to always stay in groups.

* Teach your child how to call the police.

The Amber Alert device Russell invented enables parents or others to hear what is going on as well as tracking the missing person. Any child on a bush walk, attending school, visiting friends, playing outside (even in your own garden), travelling on public transport, or taken to a shopping center should be protected in this way.
